For those of you who have been following this story, we’re coming down to the wire. The historic David Smith House located at 527 Deer Park will have its fate decided on Wednesday, Oct. 19th at 7:30 at Village Hall. You can read our previous stories about it here.
The David Smith House is one of the oldest homes in Babylon Village. Parts of the building date back to the Revolutionary War. Smith, who is buried in the Babylon Cemetery, served in the Revolutionary War under General George Washington and built the home in 1790.
The current owners of the home propose to demolish the structure and, in its place, construct a “replica” of the Smith home. They will petition the Zoning Board Of Appeals for a variance to allow the demolition. The Babylon Village Heritage Conservancy notes that the ZBA directed the owners to move and maintain the historic home. The owners now want the ZBA to reverse that decision.
If you’re interested in this issue, I encourage you to come out on Wednesday and show your support.
