In 1950-51, science fiction author Robert A. Heinlein and his wife Virginia designed and built a custom house in the in the Broadmoor district of Colorado Springs. The house is a compact 1150 square feet, but it uses the space efficiently. Almost all of the furniture, from bookshelves to beds, is built into the structure of the house. The only movable pieces are a piano, a roll-around dining table and some chairs.
